The Galaxy S9 comes with multiple forms of biometric reads that you can use to secure your phone and your data. In this video, I’ll show you how to setup the Iris Scanner so you can use it as your lock screen as well as securing aspects of your device.

We’re gonna take a look at how to use the iris scanner with your Galaxy S9 and S9+. So, swipe down from the top of the screen, and return to your settings, and then go to Lock Screen and Security. And at about the middle of the screen, we’re gonna see Iris Scanner. So, tap on there, and we’re gonna actually have to choose a secure lock screen, and then we can register our irises.

So, tap continue, and we’re gonna either choose a pattern, pin, or password. For this example, I’m gonna go with a pattern, and then I’m going to draw on my pattern, tap continue, confirm my pattern, and them I’m gonna be able to scan my irises. Now, for best results, we need to do this indoors and make sure that we take our glasses or contacts off. We need to hold the phone about 10 to 14 inches away from our face, and if we needed to, we can register just one iris by tapping on Register Just one Iris.

I’m gonna go ahead and tap continue. It shows me that I need to do it from about 10 to 14 inches away and position my eyes within the circles. So, I’m gonna go ahead and do that. Now, as you’re doing that, you’re gonna see a little red circle flashing on the top of your device. It’s on the physical device, not on the screen, so you’ll see that, and it’s gonna register your irises.

Now, this [inaudible 00:01:13] give us some tips. We’ll hold our device up 10 to 14 inches away, remove glasses or contacts, open our eyes fully. I know they look funny, like really going wide-eyed with it, but it does really help whenever you do that. Avoid direct sunlight. Keep the camera clean, and select a mask if we wanted to. So, that’s a nice, neat little overlay if we wanted to add that on there.

Tap okay, and just as we did with our fingerprint reader, we can choose to show notifications. We can change and hide the content, choose the transparency of this to show the icon only, hide the content, and even reverse the text color should we want to. Tap done, and it brings us into the iris scanner, and we can choose to remove our data, previous screen mask. We can have the iris verification with Samsung Pass and Samsung Pay. This is also another option that we have with the fingerprint reader and the face unlock as well.

We can also choose to have the iris unlocked when the screen turns on. This will unlock your phone with your irises as soon as the screen turns on without having to swipe up first. So, that’s really cool. I like to turn that on, because that way whenever I just raise my phone up, the screen turns on. It’s automatically gonna be scanning your irises, instead of having me to swipe up on the screen and then begin scanning.

So, one really cool other option here is the previous screen mask, which I glanced over. If we tap on that, we can actually see in the top-left hand corner the default one. There is no mask, but if I wanted to, I could actually choose a fun little caricature or different goggles to add onto the screen to give it a little bit more flare, give it a little bit more personality whenever I’m unlocking my device using my irises. Tapping in the top right-hand corner, I can even go into the Samsung theme store and download more screen masks for my irises, so that way it gives me a little bit more flare whenever I unlock my device.

And if you want to, you can even remove your iris data, and you can actually re-scan your irises in case you’re having some sort of problems. In the top right-hand corner, we can tap up there. We can read the disclaimer, which it tells us how to protect our eyes and even gives us some best practices for better iris recognition when trying to use our device.

So, that’s how we use the iris scanner on your Galaxy S9 and S9+. If you find this video useful, be sure and give it a thumbs up. Subscribe for more videos like this, and we’ll see you in the next one.
