With Android 8.0, which the Galaxy S9 comes with, allows you to use picture-in-picture mode with certain apps. In this video, I’ll show you how you can use it with YouTube and Google Maps to get the most out of your user experience.

Let’s take a look at how to use picture-in-picture mode on your Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus. Now, some of the applications on your device, such as Google Maps and YouTube allow you to continue watching the video or continue with your navigation directions even when you exit the App and are trying to open another way or navigate around your phone.

So let’s take a look at how that happens. Let’s go and open up YouTube, so I’m going to open up YouTube here on my device. Now I’m just going to find a video and go and start playing it. So let’s just find a random video on YouTube. We’ll tap on the play button, and now I’ll go home.

So now you can see the video is still playing, it went to the bottom right hand corner. Now, I can even tap on it and pause it. Hit the actual headphones icon, which is going to put this video into an audio only mode, and I can even drag the video around anywhere on my device.

Now, what’s great if I open up another application, say the internet here, notice that the YouTube video stays above everything. Now, if I want to get rid of it, I can swipe down to the bottom and dismiss it, or I can tap on it and even hit that X. What’s also great is it works with Google Maps.

So let’s go ahead and open up Google Maps, I’ll get directions and then tap start. So now if I hit the home button you’re going to notice that Google Maps is going to stay open, and the same thing will happen if I open up internet, I can drag the icon around, and it stays above all the applications.

What’s also cool is if you tap on any one of these picture in picture Apps, you can actually make it full screen again by tapping in the top left hand corner of the picture in picture view that’s going to make the application full screen again.

Now, you just hit your home button and it’s going to dismiss it, and you can hit the X and it’s going to dismiss the picture in picture view.

Now you’ll notice if we go back into Google Maps the navigation is still going on. So that’s really cool, it didn’t dismiss my navigation directions, it just hid the picture in picture view. So it’s kind of reminiscent of more of just hitting the home button before, where a picture in picture wasn’t an option. And again, all you have to do is hit the X to disable it.

So that’s how you use picture-in-picture on your Galaxy S9 and S9 plus. If you found this video useful, be sure and give it a thumbs up. If you want more videos like this, be sure to subscribe to State of Tech, and we’ll you in the next one.
